Slidermetrix Presents… Holiday Commercial Faceoff: Funny vs. Feel-good

Last week, CinemaBlend, an entertainment site that reports on movies, television, video games, and pop culture, posted 7 Great Holiday Commercials You Need to Watch Right Now.

We watched them. We loved them. We laughed. We cried. Well, I wasn’t crying (I think maybe I just got something in my eye.)

With the holidays just a few weeks away, we thought what better time to do a little ad hoc research (courtesy of Slidermetrix) on which type of holiday commercial works best. So, we chose two of our favorites from CinemaBlend’s list (one funny and one feel-good) and want you to tell us, by watching and rating each second-by-second using Slidermetrix, which one you like better. The two faceoff contenders are Kmart’s “Not a Christmas Commercial” and John Lewis’ “Monty the Penguin.”

Here’s a little background to help you appreciate Kmart’s “Not a Christmas Commercial” ad. In 2013, Kmart was heavily criticized by consumers for launching their first Christmas commercial a little too early (*cough*September*cough*).  As we all know, the general consensus seems to be that holiday advertisements are starting earlier and earlier every year. Instead of waiting until closer to Christmas this year to start running holiday ads, Kmart cleverly embraced last year’s negative sentiment to create this humorous commercial that pokes a little fun at themselves.

Now, most of our U.S. readers have probably never heard of John Lewis (a British department store), but its made-for-the-holidays “Monty the Penguin” commercial is the perfect pull-on-the-heartstrings, feel-good contender for our faceoff. It’s a bit over two minutes long but well worth the watch – you might want to have a tissue on stand-by just in case.

So let us know what you think! Click here to watch and rate the ads in our 2014 Holiday Commercial Faceoff. Stick around after you finish rating to see how your score measures up to other viewers.
